The Kraken, a legendary sea monster, looms large in folklore. Often depicted as a colossal octopus or squid, it haunts the seas, striking fear into sailors. Although its origins are frequently misattributed to mythology and lore from other cultures, the Kraken originates from Scandinavian lore, first mentioned in the 12th century. Tales of the Kraken describe it as so massive that its body could be mistaken for an island. Sailors reported seeing large, tentacled limbs rising from the ocean, enveloping ships, and creating maelstroms. Is the Kraken a real creature, perhaps a giant squid or octopus? Or is it merely a symbol embodying the fear of the unknown and the abyssal depths of the ocean? Either way, let’s RELEASE THE KRAKEN!

In the first episode of the Summer of Sea Monsters we will take a voyage through Norse mythology, where the legends of the Lyngbakr and Hafgufa are found. The Lyngbakr, disguised as an island adorned with heather, lured unsuspecting sailors to their doom. Meanwhile, the Hafgufa, aptly named the “sea mist,” dwarfed other sea creatures. Sailors, mistaking it for rocky outcrops or islands, faced its gaping maw. Were these sea monsters based on real encounters or rather only cautionary tales passed down through generations?

Spring-Heeled Jack is one of the most popular and mysterious figures from English folklore, emerging in the early 19th century. Known for his extraordinary leaps, he was described as having a devilish appearance with clawed hands, fiery eyes, and sometimes a metallic helmet-like head. Sightings of Spring-Heeled Jack were most common in the London area during the 1830s and 1840s. He startled and attacked people, mainly women, by leaping from dark alleys or rooftops. Despite widespread panic, he was never caught, leading to theories about his true nature—ranging from an elaborate hoax to a real person with unusual abilities. So who or what, if anything real at all, was Spring-Heeled Jack?

On January 31, 1921, The Carroll A. Deering, a five-masted schooner, was found hard aground on the treacherous Diamond Shoals off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. The Coast Guard boarded the ship and found the ship deserted, with personal belongings, lifeboats, crucial navigational equipment, and the ship's two anchors missing. Records show that the Deering passed by the Cape Lookout Lightship on January 29, 1921. The lightship's keeper, Captain Jacobson, reported being told by a person on the Deering that they lost their anchors in a storm. The U.S. government launched a comprehensive investigation, deploying ships and aircraft to search for clues. No traces of the crew, their belongings or the lifeboats were ever found.

On June 30th 1908 at 7:17 AM a massive explosion, 1000 times more powerful than that of Hiroshima, occurred in a remote area of Siberia. Known as the Tunguska Event, eye witnesses, dozens of miles away, not only claimed to have seen this explosion, but were knocked off their feet by it. The impact was registered on seismometers all around the world with some readings hitting 5 on the Richter scale. Investigations in the area found no trace of whatever caused the explosion, just that 80 million trees were knocked down over an area of 800 square miles. Theories about the cause range from a comet exploding in the atmosphere to more outlandish ideas, such as aliens or Nikola Tesla testing a death ray.

According to a chronicler at Christ Church Cathedral Priory in Canterbury named Gervase, on the evening of June 18, 1178, five monks from the monastery witnessed a strange lunar event. The monks reported seeing the Moon split as if "a flaming torch sprang up, spewing out fire, hot coals, and sparks." This phenomenon was said to persist, with the Moon's appearance fluctuating as if it were wounding itself. The monks described the Moon as having a black line forming across it, which subsequently divided, giving the impression that the Moon had split into two distinct parts. The event was noted to have lasted for a considerable duration before the Moon returned to its normal appearance. Was it a meteor, a comet, a volcano, or rather just the monk associating strange celestial apparitions to Christian victories in the Crusades?

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum heist, valued at $500 million, is one of the most notorious art thefts in history. It occurred in the early hours of March 18, 1990, when two men dressed as Boston police officers gained entry to the museum and spent 81 minutes stealing 13 pieces of art. The stolen works included both high-profile pieces and lesser-known ones. Some theories suggest it was partly an inside job by a disgruntled worker, while others believe it was orchestrated by Boston mobsters, or possibly just perpetuated by a wealthy art collector. None of the stolen pieces have been recovered, and the case remains unsolved.

On December 26, 1980, around 3am a USAF security patrol near the east gate of the RAF Woodbridge base observed strange lights descending into Rendlesham Forest located in Suffolk England. Initially, they thought it might be a downed aircraft, prompting them to investigate further. When the servicemen entered the forest they encountered a glowing object that was metallic in appearance and had colored lights. As they approached, the object seemed to move through the trees and animals on a nearby farm reportedly went into a frenzy during this time. The UK Ministry of Defence initially dismissed the incident as having no national security implications. So what did the USAF soldiers see in #RendleshamForest that night?

On November 29, 1970, a father and his two daughters were hiking in Norway’s Isdalen Valley when they came upon a grim discovery: the body of a deceased woman. Unable to identify her, authorities dubbed her the "Isdal Woman". Found near her were various items, including jewelry, a watch, bottles with labels scraped off, and clothes with removed labels. Subsequent investigation uncovered suitcases containing similarly unlabeled items, along with a coded piece of paper. Though the autopsy revealed she had ingested 50-70 sleeping pills, leading to a ruling of suicide, suspicions of murder persisted among some police and the public. The woman's extensive travels, use of fake aliases, and purported eyewitness accounts fueled speculation that she may have been a Cold War spy. The mystery of her identity and demise remains unsolved.

Seen across the world and told in various folktales, the Will-O'-the-Wisp is said to resemble a flickering lamp or lantern, often leading travelers astray from a safe path. In some cultures, the will-o'-the-wisps are often associated with ghosts, fairies, or elemental spirits. In modern times, the will-o-the-wisp has been seen as extraterrestrial rather than mystical. The will-o-the-wisp is also more commonly associated with a story about Stingy Jack who tricked the devil. In turn he was forced to wander the earth with a single ember that he carries in a hollow gourd, many now call this as a jack-o-lantern. So what or who are the will-o-the-wisps?
